The Apple Tree is a new short play by Kristy Lin Billuni that I directed as part of the Planet Earth Arts New Play Festival in 2023. The piece asks the question: what if Eve and the Apple Tree were sapphic lovers, and Eve ultimately had to make a terrible choice between the natural world and the woman she loves and the industrial world and a heteronormative existence. In directing this piece, I wanted to explore questions of how we see a world die. By planting Apple unmoving in the center of the stage, the branches of a tree seemingly sprouting from her arms, and having the world change, decay, and grey around her, I sought to explore the ways in which society pressures us away from both free expressions of queerness and a tender relationship with the natural world.
